H-shaped Shining Road
It’s 10:00 p.m. at the intersection in front of Cultural Center in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province. When the crosswalk turns green, lines on the road light up. Pedestrians can cross safely by following the lights, while drivers can see what’s happening on the road and slowly come to a halt at the stop line.
These ‘ground LED signal lights’ are part of a community outreach program by Hyundai Steel to make traffic safer. The program, called ‘H-shaped Shining Road,’ helps keep both pedestrians and drivers safe, even late at night.

LEDs to Keep Pedestrians and Drivers Safe at Night
‘H-shaped Shining Road’ project began in 2021, with the area around Hyundai Steel’s Dangjin Integrated Steelworks plant being selected as the first installation site. At the time, Dangjin was notorious for having the highest traffic accident fatality rate in South Korea’s South Chungcheong Province.
In response, employees at Hyundai Steel brainstormed to come up with the idea of installing ‘ground LED pavement markers’ and ‘ground LED signal lights,’ which the company then implemented in collaboration with Dangjin City, Dangjin Police Station, and the Dangjin City Welfare Foundation.
The Unsung Heroes Improving Traffic Safety in Dangjin
From 2021 to 2023, Hyundai Steel installed ground LED safety lights at 44 crosswalks in Dangjin near school zones and traditional markets, areas with high pedestrian traffic that are prone to accidents. This improved visibility for drivers and enabled citizens to use crosswalks more safely.
Through a number of city-level CSR activities, as well as the contribution from ‘H-shaped Shining Road’ project, the number of traffic accidents in Dangjin has dropped significantly, from 596 in 2021 to 350 in 2023. In fact, in 2023, Dangjin displayed the greatest improvement in traffic safety in all of South Korea.
Chosen as an Outstanding Example of Employee Participation Fund Usage
Approximately 510 million won was allocated to ‘H-shaped Shining Road’ project, which Hyundai Steel has sourced entirely through its employee participation fund. The project has even been chosen as an outstanding example of how this fund can be used.
Building on this success, Hyundai Steel expanded ‘H-shaped Shining Road’ project across South Korea. In 2024, ground LED lights were installed in Incheon, Suncheon, and Pohang. The approximately 286 million won allocated for this expansion came from the heartfelt contributions of 4,173 employees, representing about 34% of the total workforce.

With the number of industrial complexes nearby, there’s always heavy traffic from all the trucks on the road. Thanks to these ‘H-shaped Shining Road,’ children and the elderly can finally cross safely, day or night. It’s given me so much peace of mind.

Calls for Safer Crosswalks: Hyundai Steel’s Traffic Safety Campaign
Additionally, Hyundai Steel is conducting a ‘Traffic Safety Campaign’ as an extension of ‘H-shaped Shining Road’ project. This campaign uses placards and banners with messages like ‘Stop before crosswalks,’ ‘Stop, Look, and Cross,’ and ‘Making the Road to and from School Safe and Fun’ to raise awareness about traffic safety.
Hyundai Steel will continue its efforts toward preventing traffic accidents and raising awareness of traffic safety, as part of its mission to be a guiding light for the safety of the South Korean public.
